In a compelling display of passion and loyalty, thousands of Washington Commander’s supporters have united to voice their plea for restoring the iconic team name “Washington Redkins.” Following the recent change to “Commanders,” the fan-driven petition has gained significant momentum, drawing attention to the team’s rich history and cultural significance.
The Redskins name, synonymous with football tradition, holds deep cultural and historical meaning that honors Native American warriors’ bravery and warrior spirit. Petition signatories emphasize that its use was never meant as offensive; rather, it signified respect and admiration between communities. Any change to its designation has caused great discord among fans with deep connections to Redskins legacy.

“We write to you today as a collective voice, urging you to reconsider the recent name change from the Redskins to the Commanders,” the petition reads. “We believe that restoring the original name, the Redskins, is the right decision for the team, its loyal fanbase, and the legacy it represents.”

Although Redskins supporters recognize the significance of cultural sensitivity and inclusion, they believe erasing their name would be counter-productive to engage in meaningful dialogue about Native American issues. Instead, preserving their name presents an opportunity to educate, collaborate and foster understanding between Native American communities.
“The name ‘Commanders’ fails to capture the essence, tradition, and historical weight associated with the Redskins,” the petition states. “It lacks the uniqueness, emotional connection, and pride that our team’s original name embodies.”
As support for the petition grows, its goal of amassing 50,000 signatures appears attainable, with pledges from fans and sports enthusiasts alike.
Ron Rivera, the team’s head coach, acknowledged their concerns: “Recently, we have used the term ‘Redskins’ frequently but always with full respect for Native Americans.
Redskins fans have expressed a strong desire to keep alive a symbol of unity, strength, and shared identity that has resonated with generations of supporters. As the push to reinstate the Redskins name gathers momentum, sports community members eagerly wait to see how team officials respond to such heartfelt pleas for reinstatement of Redskins name.
